RESEARCH IN THE NEW MILLENIUM

The Institute of Psychiatry continues to build on its status of a WHO collaborating centre for mental health research, a national centre for research training and dissemination and an international centre for research collaboration. Mental health research in Pakistan is still at an early stage due to lack of funding, scarcity of expertise and lack of training opportunities for new researchers. In spite of these constraints the Institute has made considerable strides towards producing good quality research that has clinical and policy implication. This chapter summarises recent research activities taking place at the Institute.

Future Vision for Mental Health Research in Pakistan

The Institute wishes to enhance its research capacity through development of a self- sustainable model to deliver the high quality research, teaching and training. We would also like to establish further international links between research groups with similar interests through sharing the research activities and projects. We aim to publish our high quality research in national and international journals. We aim to disseminate our research and to influence policy and practice at every level of mental health care.
